It is estimated that 1 in 5 Los Angeles residents suffer from food insecurity. That’s over 2 million people. At the same time, 4000 tons of food are wasted every single day in LA county. In the US, food waste is also responsible for twice as many greenhouse gas emissions as commercial aviation, which means that reducing food waste could be an effective way to combat climate change. We are hopeful that FFLA will continue to improve these issues and create a brighter future for our community.
As high school students with jobs in the restaurant industry, we see the disturbing amount of food waste that happens every day. Knowing that millions of people in Los Angeles also face food insecurity, we set out to find a comprehensive solution for both of these problems. Thus, Feeling Full La was born.
Feeling Full La partners with local restaurants, stores, and farmers markets. Then, our dedicated volunteers pick up their leftover food that would have otherwise been thrown away, and bring it to people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in our community. We donate 100% of the food and produce we receive to various local food banks and homeless shelters.
Access to abundant and healthy food is crucial for people facing food insecurity. Feeling Full LA has recovered and donated over 25,000 pounds of baked goods and fresh produce that would otherwise be rotting in a landfill--all of which has gone to people in need through our local food banks and homeless shelters. One of these homeless shelters, Upward Bound House, even commended us with their Neighborhood Youth Ambassadors Award, which we were honored to receive. We are extremely proud of the impact we’ve made and we’re eager to help even more people.
